COACHING STAFF

Mat Santoro is entering his fourteenth year as the head coach of the University of Southern Indiana soccer program. The Screaming Eagles are 109-96-24 during that time including 7 GLVC tournaments, 2 NCAA tournaments, and a program record six consecutive winning seasons. The 2022 season will be USI’s first in DI as a member of the Summit League.

Santoro was the 2018 GLVC Coach-of-the-Year and is USI’s all-time leader in wins.

The 2018 GLVC title was USI’s first in 27 years. USI was ranked as high as 11 th nationally and hosted an NCAA tournament 2 nd -round game for the first time in program history.

In 2016, USI made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1982 and won the program’s first ever NCAA tournament game. The Screaming Eagles also spent four weeks in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 national rankings.

During Santoro’s tenure, USI has had 13 GLVC Players-of-the-Week, 13 All-GLVC awards, 8 All-Region picks, the 2016 GLVC Freshman-of-the-Year, two All-Americans, and 3 Academic All- Americans. '

USI men’s soccer has also excelled academically under Santoro. The program has earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for 11 consecutive years and the Team Academic All-GLVC Award for 5 consecutive years. Four of the program’s graduates won the GLVC Council of Presidents’ Academic Excellence Award, and the program has earned over 125 Academic All-GLVC awards since 2009.

Prior to coming to USI, Santoro was an assistant coach at The University of Memphis in Conference-USA. He assisted in all facets of the program at Memphis as the Tigers played a nationally ranked DI schedule.

Santoro began his college coaching career as an assistant at Rowan University (NJ). During his time at Rowan, Santoro was the primary recruiter for a program which won two conference championships and qualified for three NCAA tournaments, including hosting the 2000 Final Four, in which Rowan was the national runner-up.

As a player, Santoro started for University of Maryland (ACC) before transferring to Rowan where he was a 3-time All-Conference and 2-time All-Region selection. His 1990 national championship team was inducted into the Rowan Athletics Hall-of-Fame in 2017.

Mat Santoro has a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Philosophy with a minor in Physical Education, and he is a member of the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport and the United Soccer Coaches.



Staff will include the USI men's soccer coaching staff and players.

Other college coaching staff from the region will be invited to observe.
